So, what are the best exercises for fitness?  I want to know because I don’t want to waste time, I want to get fit.  Nobody wants to waste time.  Especially in todays world where time is at a premium.  Getting fit and healthy is no different.  Fitness hacks and get fit quick can be very tempting.  In professional sports we applaud the athlete that returns from injury quicker than anricipated.  Sure, some exercises may be more beneficial than others but its not what you do, it’s how you do it.

The best exercises for fitness are …

Ones that are performed properly.  In fact, ones that are performed perfectly.  You can have a room full of athletes performing the same exercise.  To the untrained observer they all look like they’re doing the same thing.  The reality, however, is that each athlete is likely to be getting something very different from the practice.  Why?  Because they’ll be performing the movement with varying levels of technical proficiency.  Those performing the movement perfectly will be maximising the benefit of it, others will simply be going through the motions.

It aint what you do it’s the way that you do it

How do you make sure that you are getting the best out of an exercise?

  1. Find a good demonstration of the movement that explains the key coaching points
  2. Tune into the technique as demonstrated
  3. Establish consistently perfect technique before speeding the movement up or adding additional resistance

Performing the best exercises for fitness properly may mean you take longer than others or that you can perform as many reps.  But it does mean that you will be maximising what you get from it.  In turn this means you are maximising your efficiency and not wasting any of your precious time.
