There are a million reasons for working out; aesthetics, conditioning, sports performance or general fitness. No matter the reason , everyone knows you have have to push yourself and work hard in order to see the best results. You can see this with every “No pain no gain” t-shirt that makes its way through the gym doors. However, in order for to sustain the motivation required to continually push yourself, it’s got to be fun!

Familiarity Breeds Contempt

A strong statement, and there is a fine line. Consistency is key, but constantly dragging yourself to the gym to complete the same 8 exercises you do every Tuesday will lead to boredom and a loss of motivation. In addition to this the body adapts and learns, it is important to keep things fresh. In order to achieve maximal stimulation and overload the body you need to change things up and keep it guessing.

Consistency is King But Add a Little Flavour

As mentioned, consistency is key! This doesn’t mean not ever changing a single thing. Keep the foundations the same and the structure doesn’t have to change massively. Simply add in a few new challenging movements, try varying intensities within any conditioning, or simply mix up your main lifts.  Try working on an unstable surface, front squatting instead of the traditional back squat, press a kettle bell upside down! Overcoming these new challenges can help motivate you and reignite your passion for training. This approach goes further than the gym.

Taking part in sports (outside of your own) can give your body the stimulus it needs to adapt and improve. Having a broad ability across numerous skills and tasks, will give you more to draw from in similar situation you may encounter in your chosen sport. Most importantly, have fun with it and enjoy it. I’m not saying you need to master all sports, but don’t turn down a kick about in the park because “footballs not really my thing”. Get comfortable being uncomfortable, challenge yourself and enjoy it.
